Our town’s Laura Barrett, honcho of the Transportation Equity Network (TEN), is crowing about Obama’s new proposed $70 billion for a nationwide high-speed rail network and the Federal Transit Administration.  “Better public transit is a proven way to quickly stimulate the economy, protect the environment and help low and middle-income people find and keep more jobs,” Barrett said.  Ten years ago, TEN launched a campaign to help make sure that public transportation, especially for the disabled and needy, get adequate federal support.Last year, 84 percent of local transit authorities, including Metro here, either raised fares or cut service, Barrett notes, so the new budget figures show that Obama and DOT Secretary Ray LaHood “are listening.”
